Named official painter of Philip IV, lived a period of intense activity as a portrait painter and favored by the members of the real family and the court. In 1627, Philip set a competition of the best painters of Spain with the subject to be the expulsion of the Moors. Velazquez won. In 1629, as an extra payment, he received 100 ducats for the picture of Bacchus. The spirit and aim of this work are better understood from its Spanish name, Los Borrachos (The Drunks), who are paying mock homage to a half-naked ivy-crowned young man seated on wine barrel. The painting is firm and solid, and the light and shade are more deftly handled than in former works. Altogether, this production may be taken as the most advanced example of the first style of Velazquez. Delta pays tribute to Velazquez’s painting “The Triumph of Baco”, but the town later called it “Los Borrachos.” It is a limited edition and each piece is numbered. Gallery collection renders homage to Drip painting, a form of abstract art in which paint is dripped or poured onto the canvas. This painting style has been used since 1946 by various famous Americans artists who defined it as: ” expressive power through material outbreaks in a frenetic vortex of signs. The Gallery collection is available in tow versions which are set apart by the cap; one offers the cap in this multicolor resin and the other offers the cap in black resin (Doue’).
